Am I getting this right?

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but I just wanna make sure I'm getting it right and I couldn't think of another place to ask this. When you make a polite kiss on the cheek thing with a girl should you actually kiss her chick or just hold your cheeks together and do a kissing motion in the air? If this is hard to understand tell me and I'll rephrase it.
