What happens to metal when acid is added?

I did an oxidation-reduction reaction experiment earlier this semester and we had to test Cu, Zn, Sn, Fe, Mg, each with HCl. According to my lab notebook Mg fizzed a little, and everything else but copper kind of dissolved a little. Now i'm not sure about the base reaction and the carbonate reaction :(
