Why is it that cities are colder in the northern hemisphere as oppose to the southern?

This isnt specifically CITIES but melbourne a city in australia rarely experiences snow and if their is its very very thin.. new york almost every year gets snow and can be up to 4-5 feet deep. These 2 cities have approximately the same distance from the equator. Both next to ocean having the same altitude.
